چکیده

Role Game is a co-located CSCL video game played by three students sitting at one machinesharing a single screen, each with their own input device. Inspired by video console games, RoleGame enables students to learn by doing, acquiring social abilities and mastering subject matterin a context of co-located collaboration. After describing the system’s ludic and gamingstructure, we present an experiment conducted in a kindergarten situation, whose results aresubjected to a usability analysis. We conclude that a console video game for learningapplications such as Role Game can easily be operated by six-year-old students who have yet tolearn to read or operate a computer. Console multiplayer games designed for learning are shownto be a powerful device for collaborative work in the classroom while maintaining itsattractiveness to the gamer. They are consistent with the need to align learning software with theschool curriculum, creating a socio-technical environment that can support meta-design andsocial creativity in an educational setting. Our findings thus confirm McFarlane ́s view that they“provide a forum in which learning arises as a result of tasks stimulated by the content of thegames, knowledge is developed through the content of the game, and skills are developed as aresult of playing the game”.

Requirements elicitation for virtual actors in collaborative learning environments

This paper reports on the elicitation of requirements for Virtual Actors in Collaborative Virtual Learning Environments (CVLEs). The methodological approach followed involves the phased development of a series of learning environments which are observed in use by parents, children and teachers. The focus of study is on the interactivity and social communication issues that arise in the learnin...

An Exploratory Study of Mobile Collaborative Learning in Developing Regions

Researchers have studied how game-based approaches to education might have impact in resource-constrained regions. However, the use of mobile technology, which allows freedom of movement and thus potentially enables more natural game-play behaviour, has not been extensively explored in the context of collaborative learning. In this paper, we explore two mobile-based approaches for using collabo...

Understanding and Mitigating Display and Presence Disparity in Mixed Presence Groupware

Mixed Presence Groupware (MPG) supports both co-located and distributed participants working over a shared visual workspace. It does so by connecting multiple single-display groupware workspaces together through a shared data structure. Our implementation and observations of MPG systems exposes two problems: the first is display disparity, where connecting heterogeneous displays introduces issu...

Understanding children's interactions in synchronous shared environments

Traditional computer technology offers limited support for face-to-face, synchronous collaboration. As a result, children who wish to collaborate using computers must adapt their interactions to the single-user paradigm most personal computers are based on. More recently, co-located groupware systems offering support for concurrent, multi-user interactions around a shared display have become te...

Exploring Collaborative Learning Methods for Multiplayer Educational Games in Low Resource Environments

To facilitate learning in low-resource environments where children must share a single computer, we developed MultiLearn, an educational, single-display groupware system. Prior work has suggested that computer games can be effective for fostering learning [5] and qualitatively supports the benefit of collaboration over competition in a multiple-input, shared display environment [2]. Through Mul...
